Multimedia Intern (4-month internship)
Job Description:
Internships in the Web newsroom of The New York Times involve the packaging of news for an online audience in a fast-paced, ever-changing work environment. A multimedia intern will work with producers, reporters and editors who work on both the Web site and the newspaper. He or she will assist in the production of photos, graphics, audio and video for the Web site. Tasks will include producing multimedia features with audio and photographs; developing interactive features with Flash; and archiving and research tasks associated with both breaking news events and enterprise stories.
The training program is intended to teach interns the skills that would enable them to become a producer at NYTimes.com. "On-the-job" training is essential in order to get a sense for what it is like to work in a newsroom. When a news story breaks, the intern will experience first hand how news judgments are made and how the plans for covering a story take shape.
Candidates must have a strong, demonstrable interest in journalism and experience in a variety of multimedia technologies including Flash, Photoshop, audio editing, HTML and XML. An understanding of how to integrate databases into multimedia presentations, knowledge of Flash AS2 and AS3 scripting, CSS implementation. and a familiarity with JavaScript frameworks and libraries are all extremely desirable.
