WestEd, a nonprofit research, development, and service agency, works with education and other communities to promote excellence, achieve equity, and improve learning for children, youth, and adults. While WestEd serves the states of Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah as one of the nation’s Regional Educational Laboratories, our agency’s work extends throughout the United States and abroad. WestEd has 16 offices nationwide, from Washington and Boston to Arizona, Southern California, and its headquarters in San Francisco.
The Information Services Department has a staff of approximately 21 people. In addition, there are about 50 other employees throughout the agency who are working on various technology applications requiring support and coordination. The Information Services Department is responsible for providing technology support for all WestEd staff and programs.
The goal of the Information Services Department is to develop comprehensive and high-quality computing and communications infrastructure to support WestEd staff, programs and clients that require various digital interactive services and connectivity capabilities to accomplish their goals. Digital services include application and file servers, Internet connectivity solutions, video conferencing capability, and support for desktop and mobile computing systems.
Position Description
The Web Systems Administrator will be responsible for the management of the agency’s scalable web services, the daily operations of website servers, and the development of operational analytics and reports. He/she will also proactively manage scalability and security, perform and audit backups and plan and execute site upgrades while managing operational infrastructure to support agency growth objectives. This position works with closely with other members of the network services team to maintain uninterrupted access to web services and the WestEd wide area network.
Responsibilities
Day-to-day duties include (and not limited to):

  • Managing day-to-day website operations and project details
  • Implementing and monitoring web systems security
    — Developing and implementing network system and user security requirements
    — Developing and implementing security plan
    — Establishing and maintaining network accounts
    — Maintaining and improving security in response to industry developments and user experience
  • Installing and expanding new facilities
    —Developing the installation work plan
    —Testing equipment and transmission media after installation
    — Implementing new system configurations
    — Preparing design for the site
    — Working with software and hardware vendors
  • Optimizing and maintaining web systems software and hardware
    — Configuring new system components in a controlled environment
    — Developing and implementing a preventive maintenance plan
    — Monitoring and maintaining software and hardware for optimal network performance
    — Reviewing and updating network configuration plan
    — Testing and verifying that system meets client specifications
  • Performing web systems infrastructure troubleshooting
    — Analyzing problems and researching solutions
    — Documenting and communicating problems, solutions, and the implementation process
    — Monitoring work load, managing time, and prioritizing requests
    — Querying manufacturer information and systems specification resources
    — Recommending, testing, and implementing a solution
  • Performing web system back-ups on internal and external web servers
  • Driving continuous support process improvement
  • Designing and implementing Standing Operating Procedures (SOP), to include escalation procedures
  • Traveling to different work sites to perform system maintenance
  • Meeting with program/project directors and staff and project sponsors on a regular basis to understand business requirements and priorities
  • Performing other duties as senior IS Department management directs

Qualifications
Required:

  • Minimum of 2 years experience with planning, preparing for, implementing, and managing Solaris projects.
  • Solaris 10 skills: create containers, install packages, manage snapshots, and manage system resources across containers.
  • Apache skills: General site configuration with mod_perl and SSL.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to draft planning documents.
  • Perl skills: install modules, from source if necessary.
  • MySQL skills: basic queries and troubleshooting, replication and back-ups.
  • Experience with postfix and sendmail

Preferred:

  • Minimum of 6 years of job experience in information technology, web services, or a related field or similar area of expertise
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in Linux and UNIX/Solaris system administration and Open Source software installation, configuration, community support, etc.
  • Minimum of 3 years of design and implementation experience with web systems
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in database architecture, management, and programming
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in scripting with Bash and Ruby
  • Solid understanding of and experience with LAN/WAN technologies; software tools for performance monitoring and troubleshooting; backup and recovery architecture; and, high-availability architecture
  • Practical experience implementing information security controls
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience with technical project management in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills used in a multi-disciplinary environment
  • Strong negotiation skills and ability to effectively resolve conflicting priorities from multiple internal customers
  • Experience setting policies, procedures, network software and hardware standards, documentation standards.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with development and program staff to address operational website issues.
  • Technical expertise to manage outsourced website agreements.
  • Ability to adhere to standards in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to thrive within an environment that relies heavily on the principles of teamwork.
  • Must be available for on-call support

  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science or a related discipline
  • Experience working in non-profit organization
